Vocal technique and interpretation
The light lyric tenor Howard Crook finished his
musical and dramatic studies with a 'master of music' degree from the
University of Illinois, USA, specialising in opera.
After having won the second prizes in the vocal competitions of Paris and s'Hertogenbosch
(Holland), he moved to the Netherlands and became a well-known performer in
opera, concert, radio and recordings. These include the most of J.S. Bach's
sacred works with Philippe Herreweghe, 'Scylla et Glaucus' (Leclair) and
'Les Nuits d'Eté' (Berlioz) with John Eliot Gardiner, 'The Messiah' (Händel)
with Trevor Pinnock and an assortment of Lully/Rameau operas with William
Christie, Hugo Reyne and Mark Minkowski.
Howard Crook has incarnated a large part of the haute-contre repertory of
the French baroque and his interpretation of the evangelist in Bach's
passions has become a reference.
Recently, Howard sang the roles of 'Thesee' and 'Acis' of Lully respectively
in Boston and Washington, and in 2006 recorded the roles of 'Thesee' (Lully)
and 'l'Ormindo' (Cavalli) in Europe. Both these CD's were received with wide
acclaim in 2007. In 2008 Howard Crook sang "Les Nuits d'Eté" of Berlioz with
the Burgos Symphonic Orchestra.
Mr. Crook's masterclasses in baroque interpretation include Tokyo, Prague,
Bucharest, Amherst, Juilliard School in New York and countless others in
France.

Le tenor lyrique Howard Crook terminait ses études musicales et dramatiques
à l'Université d'Illinois (Etats Unis), qu'il achève avec un diplôme de
'master of music' specialisé en opera.
Après avoir remporté les deuxièmes prix des concours internationaux de chant
de Paris et s'Hertogenbosch (Pays Bas), il s'installe en Hollande et devient
un soliste réputé tant à l'opera et au concert, qu'à la radio et au travers
de nombreux enregistrements. Parmi ceux-ci, on compte la plupart des oeuvres
sacrées de J.S. Bach avec Philippe Herreweghe, 'Scylla et Glaucus' (Leclair)
et 'Les Nuits d'Eté' (Berlioz) avec J.E. Gardiner, 'Le Messie' (Händel) avec
Trevor Pinnock et plusieurs operas de Lully et Rameau avec William Christie,
Hugo Reyne et Mark Minkowski.
Howard Crook aura déjà interprèté sur scene une majeure partie des rôles de
haute-contre dans la musique française du XVIIIème siècle, et son
interpretation du rôle de l'evangéliste dans les passions de Bach est
maintenant considéré comme une référence.
Recemment, Howard a chanté les rôles de 'Thesee' et 'Acis' de Lully à Boston

également dans l'enregistrement de l'Ormindo' de Cavalli sorti en 2007.
Howard Crook enseigne l'art du chant baroque au CNR de Paris et dirige
nombreux masterclass en Europe. Il était invité, notamment, 2 fois en
Printemps 2008 pour faire des coachings dans la musique française baroque à
Juilliard School of Music, New York.
