Piano
An artist of great creativity and charisma, Mikhail Rudy enthuses
audiences worldwide with his profound musicality and his extraordinary virtuosity. He was
born in Russia where he studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Jacob Flier. After winning
First Prize at the Marguerite Long Competition in Paris, he settled in France where he was
since then appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government. It was
apt recognition for a man whose pursuit of an outstanding musical career has always been
inextricably linked with a search for excellence in many areas of art and culture. As a
concert and recording pianist his honours are many: the Prix de l'Academie du Disque
Français for his Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 and Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1 with
the St Petersburg Philharmonic/Jansons; the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of
Szymanowski solo piano works; the Grand Prix Academie Charles Cros for his Scriabin cycle
and the Grand Prix Liszt in Budapest for his recording of solo pieces by that composer;
Der Deutsche Schallplatten Kritik Prize for his Shostakovich concerti with LPO and Berlin
Philharmonic/Jansons.
It is significant that Rudy's concert debut in the West was a
performance of Beethoven's “Triple Concerto” with Mstislav Rostropovich and
Isaac Stern - composer and performers creating a synthesis of East and West which Rudy has
himself always sustained in his programming and in the essence of his music making. The
occasion was a celebration of the 90th birthday of Marc hagall - a painter whom he has
admired and an event which gave Rudy the opportunity to be close to the painter in his
last years.
Following invitations set the standard for what has become the highest
level international career: an American debut with the Cleveland Orchestra/Maazel; an
invitation to the Salzburg Easter Festival with Karajan; a London debut with the London
Symphony Orchestra/Tilson Thomas and a performance of the Schubert-Liszt “Wanderer
Fantasie” with the Berlin Philharmonic/Jansons at Waldbühne. These are orchestras
which continue to feature in Rudy's schedule, along with others including the Pittsburgh
Symphony, Philadelphia, Boston, Houston, Baltimore, St Louis, Seattle, Montreal, Toronto,
Accademia di Santa Cecilia di Roma, La Scala di Milano, Maggio Musicale Firenze, RAI
Torino, Tonhalle Zurich, Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Residentie The Hague, Rotterdam
Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, Hamburg NDR, Stuttgart Philharmonic, Köln Gurzenich,
Köln WDR, Dresden Staatskappelle, Dresden Philharmonic, Berlin Staatskappelle, Stockholm

Since his debut in Paris with Paul Paray, Rudy has regularly performed
with all French orchestras where he remains one of the most popular artists. Rudy also
frequently visits his native Russia where he is an regular guest of the Saint Petersburg
Philharmonic as well as main Moscow Orchestras.
Rudy appears at major festivals such as Berlin, Vienna, Tanglewood,
Blossom, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Harrogate, Schleswig-Holstein, Concertgebouw Amsterdam,
Carinthischer Sommer, Piano Ruhr Festival, Festival Pianistico Michelangeli di Brescia e
Bergamo, Prague Spring and Autumn Festivals, Aix en Provence, La Roque d’Anthéron
and most of the French festivals including Nohant, Colmar, Sully sur Loire and Strasbourg.
On stage, Rudy regularly receives praise from the critics: “Rudy
tops the list of pianists who tackle the Rachmaninoff.” Washington Post In a Mozart
concerto: “…the poetic playing of the buccaneering pianist made for exciting,
edge-of-the-seat listening”. The Glasgow Herald “Rudy finally performed a piece
that Jansons is famous for, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka. The superhuman virtuosity he

Rudy founded the prestigious St Riquier Festival where he was Artistic
Director for twenty years. He is also a respected television broadcaster and has
contributed to a BBC television documentary on the life and music of Tchaikovsky. In
France he created a series of radio projects for France-Musique, illuminating the life and
works of Scriabin, Brahms, Szymanowski and Janácek and he is active in experimental
video-filming and writing.
Rudy has developed an exciting, innovative project for two pianos,
“Double Dream”, with great jazz pianist Misha Alperin which consists of partly
rewritten and partly improvised compositions of classical repertoire. The CD, released in
2004 on EMI Classics, received many distinctions including “Best Record of the
Month” in Gramophone. “Rudy is a pianist with an enormous musical appetite…
an intrepid explorer” (Bryce Morrison). “(both artists)… display artistry
most people would die for” (John Brunning, Classic FM). In 2006, they give
performances in France, the UK at the Jersey Festival and at the Copenhagen Jazz festival
in Tivoli. “To moments of astonishing ensemble playing, you can add another
characteristic of the duo: the sense that each player enjoyed listening to the

Rudy wrote and performed together with French actor Robin Renucci a
theatrical and musical play after Wladyslaw Szpilman’s book “The Pianist”.
The show ran in Paris in 2005 for more than four months where it received both audience
and critical acclaim. It then toured 45 cities of France early 2006. Rudy’s highly
acclaimed recordings on EMI include Rachmaninov's complete works for piano and orchestra
with the St Petersburg Philharmonic/Jansons (the initial recording in that series being
the first concerto recording the orchestra had made for over thirty years); Brahms solo
works in a three disc set; Janacek solo works and orchestral works with the Paris Opera
Orchestra/Mackerras; solo works by Szymanowski, Ravel, Schubert, Liszt and Scriabin. Other
releases include Shostakovich concerti with the London Philharmonic and the Berlin
Philharmonic/Jansons and his solo recording of Stravinsky's complete
"Petrouchka" (transcription Stravinsky/Rudy), original piano works and partly
unpublished transcriptions by Richard Wagner. His latest CD is dedicated to Chopin
“Sonata No.2” and “24 Preludes”.
Mikhail Rudy’s recent highlights include concerts with Russian
National Orchestra/Pletnev, Budapest National Orchestra/Kocsis, a tour in Austria with the
Royal National Scottish Orchestra/Walter Weller, with concerts in Musikverein in Vienna
and Grossefestspielhaus in Salzburg, four concerts with the Santa Cecilia
Orchestra/Mstislav Rostropovitch, both in Rome and Madrid. In North America, he opens the
season of the Vancouver Symphony and is the guest of the Milwaukee Symphony orchestra. At
the beginning of the 2006/07 season he is the soloist of the Bavarian Radio Orchestra
under Mariss Jansons for the opening concerts of their season, gives a recital at the
Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris (complete late Brahms solo pieces), plays both in
Shanghai (recital at the Shanghai International Piano Forum) and Taipei (Taipei National
Symphony and a chamber music concert), with the Orquesta Sinfonica de Baleares/P. Bender,
the Orchestre de Bretagne/M. Atzmon, the Luxembourg European Soloists, and gives a
Norwegian concert tour with jazz pianist Misha Alperin.

avec l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Saint Petersbourg dirigé par Mariss Jansons, le
Grand Prix du Disque pour son récital d’œuvres pour piano de Szymanowski, le
Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros pour son cycle Scriabine et le Grand Prix Liszt de
Budapest pour une anthologie de pièces du compositeur hongrois.
Mikhaïl Rudy a fait ses débuts en Occident avec le Triple Concerto de
Beethoven en compagnie de Mstislav Rostropovitch et Isaac Stern à l’occasion des 90
ans de Chagall, un peintre que Rudy a toujours admiré avec ferveur et qu’il a bien
connu dans ses dernières années.
Depuis lors, ses engagements reflètent son statut de soliste
international au plus haut niveau : débuts américains à Cleveland avec Lorin Maazel,
Festival de Pâques de Salzbourg avec Herbert von Karajan, débuts à Londres avec le
London Symphony et Michael Tilson-Thomas, concert à la Waldbühne de Berlin avec le
Philharmonique de Berlin… Mikhail Rudy est toujours l’invité régulier de ces
orchestres, ainsi que de nombreux autres. Depuis ses débuts à Paris en 1977 avec Paul
Paray, il joue avec tous les grands orchestres français. Il retourne également dans sa
Russie natale où il est invité par les meilleurs orchestres de Moscou et de
Saint-Pétersbourg. En 2006, il ouvre la saison de l’Orchestre Symphonique de la
Radio Bavaroise avec Mariss Jansons, joue avec l’Orchestre de la Santa Cecilia sous
la direction de Mstislav Rostropovitch et donne un récital au Théâtre des Champs
Elysées avec l’intégrale des derniers opus de Brahms.
Mikhaïl Rudy a participé à de nombreuses émissions de télévision -
ainsi sa large contribution apportée à un documentaire de la BBC consacré à
Tchaikovsky ; pour France Musique, il a également contribué à l’élaboration et à
la réalisation d’une série d’émissions sur Scriabine, Brahms, Szymanovski et
Janácek ; il pratique la vidéo expérimentale et l’écriture. Son duo « Double
Dream » avec le grand pianiste de jazz Misha Alperin consiste en un programme original de
compositions, en partie écrites et en partie improvisées, issues du répertoire
classique, qui a déjà reçu un vif succès en Norvège, en Allemagne et en France. Il
fait l’objet d’un enregistrement discographique paru chez EMI en mai 2004.
Rappelons également le succès du spectacle « Le Pianiste » tiré du livre de W.
Szpilman avec Mikhaïl Rudy et Robin Renucci, production qui est reprise en tournée en
France et en Belgique en 2006 et au Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord à Paris en février
2007.
Sa riche discographie comprend, entre autres, l’intégrale des
concerti de Rachmaninov avec Mariss Jansons et l’Orchestre Philharmonique de
Saint-Petersbourg - le premier volet de ce cycle ayant été aussi le premier disque de
concerto enregistré par cet orchestre depuis plus de trente ans. La sortie de cette
intégrale, coupléee avec le concerto de Tchaikowsky en un coffret, a été choisie comme
la meilleure référence par le célèbre Penguin Guide de Londres. Elle comprend
également plusieurs disques consacrés à Brahms, ré-édités en coffret,
l’intégrale pour piano seul de Janácek, ainsi que son œuvre concertante
enregistrée avec l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Paris sous la direction de Charles
Mackerras, les oeuvres pour piano seul de Szymanovski, Ravel, Schubert, Liszt et
Scriabine, ainsi qu’un cycle de musique de chambre avec Michel Portal et de sonates
avec Vladimir Spivakov. Le Premier Concerto de Chostakovitch avec l’Orchestre
Philharmonique de Berlin et Mariss Jansons, et le Deuxième Concerto de Chostakovitch avec
le London Philharmonic et Mariss Jansons, a recu le prix allemand Der Deutschen
Schallplatten Kritik. Après un CD consacré aux œuvres originales pour piano et
quelques transcriptions en partie inédites de Richard Wagner, EMI a publié en 2006 un
disque Chopin comprenant les 24 Préludes et la 2ème Sonate.
