Singing
Robin Bowman is head of vocal studies at one of today's
finest conservatoires - the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London,
and is thus in the forefront of developing the next generation of young
singers.
Trained initially as a musicologist and Lied-accompanist,
he has worked in four continents as an accompanist and chamber-music
pianist, having numbered Gérard Souzay and Dawn Upshaw among his concert
partners. He has also been much involved, as coach and recital-accompanist,
in the successful career-launch of Katarina Jovanovic, whom he first met
when presiding over the jury for the 1998 Belgrade Jeunesses Musicales
competition.
His discography of English French and American song
repertoire contains a two-volume set of songs by Charles Ives with the
baritone Henry Herford which gained a British Music Retailers Association
award. He has published a book for singing teachers on "style and
interpretation", and owes much of his expertise to a period of
working with the French baritone Pierre Bernac (for whom Poulenc wrote
more than half of his entire song output) during the last years of the
singer's life.
Unsurprisingly therefore he is one of the world's
leading authorities on the performance of French vocal repertoire and the
techniques for singing the French language in western classical repertoire.
He is French consultant for the National Opera Studio, London, worked for
many years as répétiteur, coach and language coach for Glyndebourne
Festival Opera, and presents an annual series of workshop-masterclasses
for the Académie Internationale d'Eté de Nice - one of very few
non-French people on the staff - as well as numerous other summer schools
in various countries. Further work outside his native England includes
regular recital and teaching visits to Japan. He is a frequent member of
international competition and conservatoire juries, and has recently been
given a term of sabbatical leave by the Guildhall School in order to
complete two further texts, one for singers and singing teachers and one
for accompanists and coaches, shortly to be available through the
Guildhall School website.
Né en 1948, Robin Bowman a poursuivi d’abord une éducation de musicologue et de
pianiste. Depuis sa rencontre avec Pierre Bernac en 1969, il a commencé une carrière
comme accompagnateur de récital et de coach qui est toujours en plein développement.
Il fut assistant de Pierre Bernac, principalement pour ses classes à l’Académie
Maurice Ravel à St Jean de Luz jusqu’à la mort de Bernac en 1980. Depuis lors, il
restait à l’Académie comme assistant pour les autres professeurs (Souzay, Benoit,
Bacquier etc.) toujours avec, en supplément, sa propre classe d’accompagnement,
jusqu’en 1994.
Depuis 1972, il a assuré les classes de répertoire vocal français à la Guildhall
School of Music and Drama à Londres, et depuis sa fondation en 1976, il est nommé
consultant français au National Opera Studio, également à Londres, et durant une
douzaine d’année était répétiteur pour Glyndebourne Festival Opera.
Ses disques comportent, en tant qu’accompagnateur, le répertoire français,
anglais et américain, et depuis longtemps il a fait parti de nombreux stages
d’été, ci-inclus Tanglewood Music Center aux Etats-Unis. Entre 1980 et 1993 il
était directeur musical d’un festival printanier de musique de chambre à St.
Emilion – Musique et Vins dans les Châteaux et depuis 1985 a fait parti du conseil
d’administration (directorat) à la Guildhall School of Music & Drama à Londres.
En janvier 1997, il est nommé chef de la faculté des études vocales à la même école
en succession à Noelle Barker et Johanna Peters.
Parmi ses nombreux partenaires, il a fait récemment une série récitals en Europe
avec Dawn Upshaw. De plus en plus on lui demande de faire partie des juries des concours
internationaux, comme par exemple, pour être président du jury vocal jeunesses musicales
à Belgrad en mars 1998 et 2003.
Il est maintenant invité partout en été pour donner des cours qui unissent la
compréhension et la présentation musicale et poétique avec l’approfondissement de
la connaissance du développement vocal.
