As one of most internationally renowned Chinese pianists
and conductors, Xu Zhong is the founding member and Artistic Director of
China Shanghai International Piano Competition, Deputy Chairman of
Shanghai Oriental Art Center Arts Committee and Executive Artistic
Director of Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
Among the orchestras and opera companies he has conducted are the Ensemble
Orchestral de Paris, Orchestre Régional de Cannes, Orchestre National de
Lille, Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonietta de Lausanne, Orquesta
Sinfónica de Baleares Ciutat de Palma, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, China
Philharmonic Orchestra, Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Shanghai
Philharmonic Orchestra.
He has enjoyed successful collaborations with many of the most
world-renowned musicians, including Paul Badura-Skoda, Lazar Berman,
Andrea Bonatta, Sergiu Commissiona, Michel D'alberto, Philippe Entremont,
Ian Hopson, Pavel Kogan, Vladimir Krainev, Hiroko Nakamura, Arto Noras,
Gerard Poulet, Jacques Taddei, Arie Vardi and Dame Fanny Waterman.
Xu Zhong was born into a family of medical researchers in Shanghai. His
early childhood music education from Prof. Wang Yu of Shanghai
Conservatory of Music prepared him for the rigorous formal music education
he was to receive in the class of Dominique Merlet at Conservatoire
National Superieur de Musique de Paris.
Xu Zhong won out in numerous prestigious international competitions since
1988, including The 1st Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, The
Santander Paloma O'shea International Piano Competition, The 5th Tokyo
International Piano Competition and The 10th Tchaikovsky International
Piano Competition in Moscow.
All these prizes brought Xu Zhong worldwide fame and since then he has
taken up a concert career spanning Europe, North America, South America,
South-East Asia and etc. He has worked with Orchestra de Paris, French
National Symphony Orchestra, Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Amsterdam
Concertgebouw, MDR Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra,
Houston Symphony Orchestra, China Philharmonic Orchestra, Japan
Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Chamber
Orchestra, Holland Chamber Orchestra and Israel Chamber Orchestra, etc.
Xu Zhong participates to international master-classes in France Fontaine
Bleau School of Fine Arts&Music and Academie Internationale d'Ete de
Nice, where he transmits his musical knowledge to the younger generation.
He is regularly invited to attend as a jury member of international piano
competitions, such as The 54th Busoni Piano Competition in Bolzano Italy,
Clara Haskil International Piano Competition Switzerland, AXA Dublin
International Piano Competition, Leeds International Pianoforte
Competition, Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition, International
Franz Liszt Piano Competition and Seoul International Music Competition.
Xu Zhong's professional experience and achievements inside China are
twofold, administrative and artistic. Xu Zhong has been Artistic
Consultant of China Shanghai International Arts Festival and Artistic
Director of "French Culture in Shanghai", L'ANNEE DE LA FRANCE
EN CHINE 2003/2005. He was nominated to be Music Consultant of Shanghai
Concert Hall, member of Shanghai Grand Theatre Arts Group Artistic
Committee in 2005.
Connu tout d'abord, pour être l'un des pianistes et chefs chinois les
plus renommés à l'échelle internationale, Xu Zhong, on le sait moins,
est également membre fondateur et directeur artistique du Concours
International de Piano de Shanghaï, Chine et directeur artistique de
l'Orchestre Philharmonique de Shanghaï. Il a pu profiter de
collaborations fructueuses avec des musiciens mondialement connus parmi
lesquels on compte Philippe Entremont, Sergiu Commissiona, Paul
Badura-Skoda, Arie Vardi, Vladimir Krainev, Lazar Berman, Michel Dalberto,
Arto Noras, Gérard Poulet, et Pavel Kogan.
Xu Zhong est issu d'une famille de chercheurs en
médecine originaire de Shanghaï. Il reçoit ses premières leçons de
musique du professeur Wang Yu du Conservatoire de Shanghaï qui sait le
préparer à la rigueur formelle qu'il rencontrera dans les classes de
Dominique Merlet au Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris
Depuis 1988, Xu Zhong a remporté de nombreux concours
internationaux parmi les plus prestigieux : le premier Concours
International de Piano Hamamatsu, le Concours International de Piano
Santander Paloma O'Shea, le 5e Concours International de Piano de Tokyo et
le 10e Concours International de Piano Tchaïkovsky à Moscou.
Tous ces prix ont permis à Xu Zhong de connaître une
renommée mondiale et de développer sa carrière de concertiste tant en
Europe qu'en Amérique du Nord, du Sud, et en Asie du Sud-Est. Lors de la
Folle Journée du Japon qui s'est tenue en mai 2006, il a été très
remarqué des journalistes qui en ont fait un des grands pianistes du
moment, révélé à la scène internationale. Il représente l'avenir de
l'Asie. Il a travaillé avec l'Orchestre de Paris, l'Orchestre National de
France, l'Orchestre Symphonique de l'Etat de Moscou, le Concertgebouw
d'Amsterdam, l'Orchestre symphonique de la MDR, l'Orchestre Symphonique de
Vancouver, l'Orchestre Symphonique de Houston, l'Orchestre Symphonique de
Tokyo, le China Philharmonic Orchestra, le Japan Philharmonic Orchestra,
l'Orchestre de Chambre de Vienne, l'Orchestre de Chambre de Hollande,
l'Orchestre de Chambred'Israël, entre autres.
Xu Zhong participe également à des master-classes
internationales ; en France, notamment à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts et de
Musique de Fontainebleau et à l'Académie internationale d'Eté de Nice ;
c'est une occasion pour lui, de transmettre ses connaissances musicales à
la nouvelle génération. Il est régulièrement invité en tant que
membre du jury de concours internationaux, comme le Concours de Piano
Busoni de Bolzano, Italie, le Concours International de Piano Clara
Haskil, Suisse, le Concours International de Piano AXA de Dublin, et le
Concours International de Pianoforte de Leeds.
Son expérience professionnelle et tout ce qu'il a pu
accomplir en Chine s'organise autour de deux axes majeurs : l'un
artistique, l'autre, administratif. En effet, il a occupé le poste de
consultant artistique du Festival International des Arts de Shanghaï,
Chine et directeur artistique de la " French Culture in Shanghaï
", l'ANNEE de la FRANCE en CHINE, 2003/2005. Il a été nommé
consultant musical du Concert Hall de Shanghaï, membre du comité
artistique du Shanghai Oriental Arts Center ainsi que du comité
artistique du Shanghaï Grand Theater. Enfin, il est le vice-président du
comité artistique du Shanghaï Oriental Arts Center.
